Our Autumn/Winter
'In Conversation' Series,
and our
Blake and Music Symposium

David Worrall will start our Autumn/Winter ‘In Conversation’ Series this September with a discussion on his latest book William Blake's Visions: Art, Hallucinations, Synaesthesia, while in October Ines Tebourski will discuss the role of Los as a narcissist in Jerusalem.
William Blake's Visions: Art, Hallucinations, Synaesthesia is an inquiry into whether what Blake called his ‘visions’ can be attributed to recognizable perceptual phenomena. The conditions identified include visual hallucinations (some probably derived from migraine aura), and auditory and visual hallucinations derived from several types of synaesthesia. Their individual phenomenology is recoverable, both within his art and writings and also through the testimonies of his friends. David Worrall will present this talk on 23 September, 2024 at 19.00-20.00.
This presentation aims at showcasing the way Los - a major character in William Blake’s poetry - is a healthy narcissist. This is mainly studied through Jerusalem, Blake’s longest and culminating poem, that revolves around the idea of Los’s mission to save Albion, who stands for England in Blake’s poetry, and humanity in general. This presentation seeks to bring to bear Blake’s poetic as well as artistic productions within a multimodal analysis that takes into consideration Blake’s amalgamation of the “sister arts” in the production of his illuminated poetry. Ines Tebourski will give this talk on 7 October, 2024 at 19.00-20.00.
Times given are London-standard time (GMT/BST).

Musical Afterlives Symposium
|
|
A free one-day, online symposium from the Global Blake Network exploring musical settings of Blake's poetry and his inspiration on classical and popular artists.
Date: 4 November, 2024 (online via Zoom)
Keynote Speaker: Barry Miles
The aim of this symposium is to present a comprehensive discussion of Blake's reception in music in order to understand not only the genesis and motivations of the phenomenon, but also its endurance in the digital age, when multimedia and intermediality play a central role in the dissemination of literature. It also encompasses the articulation of word, sound and image in the appropriation of his work, which ranges from album covers and posters to music settings.
